Caitriona Balfe has shared a photo on the set of Outlander Season 5. While many are focusing on the goat in the image, can we cheer for the sun shining?
Most of the latest updates on Outlander Season 5 filming have been about the rain. So although I will get to the goat in just a minute, I want to cheer about the sun shining on the set in the latest photo shared by Caitriona Balfe.
You can see the blue sky in the photo just behind Balfe. It’s a beautiful sight to see considering all the rain Scotland has had over the last few days. Even a previous update from Balfe was of filming on hold temporarily while the harsher rain passed.

However, it is important to talk about a couple of things in the photo, and the first is the handsome co-star in Balfe’s selfie. Or maybe this dapper young man has decided to photobomb. We all know animals are notoriously bad for taking directions. They say not to film with either animals or children and Outlander films with both!
The goat isn’t a surprising co-star, to be honest. He (or maybe she) won’t be in the series much, I wouldn’t think. Having the odd animal now and then will be important for the setting of Fraser’s Ridge. The Frasers have livestock to live on the Ridge, so we need to see said livestock now and then.
Unfortunately, the show can’t always get into the details the book does. This is purely because filming with animals is so difficult. A certain white sow got a mention in Season 4, but we didn’t see all the mischief she gets up to in the books because it would have been far too difficult to film fully. So, the use of animals is more to create a sense of life on the Ridge.
What’s the other thing to look at right now? It will be the makeup being used. The show is certainly aging our favorite couple. We’ve already seen it in Jamie’s lighter hair (redheads tend to go blonde instead of grey) and now we’re seeing it in Claire’s eyes. You can see the bags and crow’s feet starting to form.
Before anyone jumps on me for being disrespectful for pointing this out, all I want to do is note that there’s a passage of time. “The Fiery Cross” only really sees the time move forward a few years, so this could certainly mean combining Books 5 and 6 is possible.
We could see some of the storylines from Book 6 brought forward to save some of the storylines from Book 5 for Season 6. This would allow production to tell the story a little more like traditional TV, keeping specific parts of the storylines together.
Who would have thought we could take so much from one quick image, though?
