Outlander Season 5 premiere set for 2020 is nothing to worry about
It’s going to be a long Droughtlander, but that doesn’t mean we have to worry about the future of the series. Outlander Season 5 is set to premiere in 2020, and I anticipate the spring.
During the STARZ TCA panel yesterday, Chief Operating Officer Jeffrey Hirsch shared that Outlander Season 5 wouldn’t premiere until 2020. This is nothing to worry about when it comes to the future of the show, though.
In all honesty, the 2020 premiere date isn’t a surprise. I’ve expected this date for some time, especially with filming starting in April 2019. The filming wouldn’t be finished until the end of this year and then there are months of post-production work to carry out. So, January 2020 was always going to be the absolute earliest.

Now it sounds like it will be later, probably around March 2020. This isn’t a bad thing for the show (it could be excellent for the Emmys 2020) and doesn’t mean STARZ has no hope in the fifth season. It’s all due to scheduling, according to TVLine.
Something you may notice is that STARZ only airs new episodes of its original programming on Sunday nights. That means only one or two shows air each week, so it shouldn’t be all that surprising that time is limited.
Hirsch also shared that Power would be split in two halves, with the second half airing in January 2020. If there are 10 episodes to the final season like there were 10 in Power Season 5, we’re looking at five weeks in January 2020, taking us to mid-February at the earliest. There may be a few more episodes. A start date in March 2020 for Outlander Season 5 makes sense for scheduling on the network and ensuring all post-production work is complete.
There’s nothing to worry about the future of the series. This isn’t a sign that STARZ has no hope in the show. In fact, there’s a lot of hope in the show that is focused on strong women. One of the reasons Counterpart was canceled was because it had a male lead!
According to Deadline, STARZ is focusing on a premium female audience and Counterpart didn’t fit that. This is great news for Outlander because the show is tailored more to women than men.
