Emmys 2019: Outlander snubbed of all recognition

The Emmys 2019 nominations have been announced. Outlander didn’t get one nomination this year. Is there anything positive to take from this?

Outlander has been snubbed at the Emmys again. The Emmys 2019 nominations have been announced, and there isn’t one mention of the show. This is despite six FYC categories.

In a way, I don’t think it’s all that surprising, but it is annoying. The show has never received the nominations that it’s deserved in the past. Sam Heughan is routinely overlooked, despite showing some of the largest acting ranges from scene to scene. It’s possible to tell his emotions immediately just from the looks on his face.

Usually, Caitriona Balfe lands a nomination for awards, even if the show doesn’t. That didn’t happen this season. But when I think back to Season 4, there’s not much that stands out that is Emmy worthy compared to some of the scenes in Game of Thrones and Killing Eve. And I do want to say that I’m happy to see Mandy Moore finally get an Emmy nomination for This Is Us.

I’ll also state that with Game of Thrones airing its last season — and breaking HBO live viewing records — it was always going to see major nominations at the Emmys 2019. If you look at the Best Supporting Actress category, you’ll see four Game of Thrones actresses alone! In the Best Actress, there’s Emilia Clarke.

The only person I do think deserved to get a nomination is Richard Rankin. When it comes to the whole of Season 4, his scenes in “Providence” stand out the most. But even then, was it enough to go up against some other major shows?

And that’s part of the problem. It’s the size of Outlander compared to other shows. This little series on STARZ is still growing its fanbase. It’s still gaining recognition. With the arrival on Netflix, there’s a chance that the fanbase will grow further, but the popularity of a show with fans has always affected the popularity at awards shows.

You just have to look at Game of Thrones to see its growth. It’s earlier seasons didn’t get as much recognition as they should have. It was only around the third or fourth season that the nominations grew — that the popularity grew.

There’s still hope for Outlander. There’s room for growth. The Emmys 2019 nominations may not see the show, but that doesn’t mean the Emmys 2020 nominations won’t (well, as long as the show has episodes within the time period, which I don’t think it will).

It’s sad, but I’ve already said how the award shows aren’t the greatest thing for the series’ popularity. Netflix’s arrival is better. Awards are great for showing recognition, but if Sam Heughan didn’t get anything for “Wentworth Prison” and Caitriona Balfe didn’t get anything for “Faith,” I don’t think Season 4 was going to be the season for the nominations.

And just because our actors didn’t get nominations doesn’t mean we have to be rude towards other actors. Those who have been nominated are worthy for their own seasons. In fact, I’d like to see Emilia Clarke win the Best Actresses award, purely for the way she portrayed that breakdown into becoming the Mad Queen in the final season.

The one lack of nomination I am most disappointed in is the lack of recognition for Terry Dresbach. In 2018, she was nominated for Outstanding Period Costume, but that wasn’t the case this season. It’s a shame because those Native costumes were exquisite!
