Outlander Season 4’s quieter book meant more time for the quieter moments
Compared to Voyager, Drums of Autumn is a quieter book. This could have been a challenge for Outlander Season 4, but Toni Graphia shares that it meant more time for quieter moments.
When it comes to TV shows, there needs to be some sort of action in every episode. Having too many quiet moments doesn’t always translate as well as it would in a book. That meant the quietness of “Drums of Autumn,” compared to “Voyager,” could have been a problem for Outlander Season 4.
Fortunately, the showrunners and writers found a way around that, according to Toni Graphia in an interview with Digital Spy. The quieter elements to the book – focusing more on creating a homestead instead of sailing the high seas – meant that the writing could focus on some of the quieter, often more romantic moments.

It was because of the quietness of the book that the show was able to add in that beautiful moment when Jamie gave Claire her new ring. It was because of this that the inclusion of the Frank flashbacks was possible. After all, Frank continues to play a part in Brianna and Claire’s lives (especially Brianna) and the flashbacks were the best way to show that instead of half-hearted attempts through mentions of him.
Of course, there was still some action and drama thrown in there. We had to see Roger sold off to slavery and Claire, Jamie, and Young Ian had to go off to find him. This wasn’t a season that was dull by any standards – well, unless you were only looking for the Claire and Jamie story of the first couple of seasons, which was never going to happen – but there were some nice quiet moments throughout.
