Outlander fans watching the Game of Thrones series finale were in for a treat when a particular familiar face made a return.

Caution: There are spoilers in this post for the Game of Thrones series finale.

The Game of Thrones series finale has been met with mixed reviews. The showrunners expected that so it isn’t really that surprising. But this isn’t the point of this post. There was one particular Outlander actor that made a return to the series.

More from Outlander Fandom

After the death of Daenerys, we jumped forward a couple of weeks. The lords and ladies of Westeros had gathered to discuss what would happen next. Naturally, Grey Worm wanted justice, which meant the death of Jon Snow at the very least. However, the lords and ladies had other ideas.

One of those lords was Edmure Tully, played by Outlander’s Tobias Menzies. Yes, Frank Randall/Black Jack Randall popped up again in Game of Thrones, last seen in the seventh season and in the third season before that.

Edmure was the only survivor of House Tully, after being imprisoned after his wedding night by the Freys and Lannisters. During the seventh season, he acted against his uncle because of his wife (who he’d not seen since his wedding night) and his child (who he’d never met). With the Lannisters gone, it wasn’t all that surprising to see Edmure back.

Outlander fans watching the series would have immediately recognized Menzies as his Outlander characters instead of his Game of Thrones one. After all, he has had more to do on the time-traveling series than the one with dragons. However, it was certainly a well-kept secret to see Menzies return for the series finale.

Fans can see Menzies in The Crown Season 3 on Netflix, which will air later this year.
