Let’s start with the 1968 event that saw Geillis (and in the books, she had a co-conspirator) go through the stones. Geillis landed about 10 years before she actually intended to go, getting to Scotland in the 1730s instead of the 1740s. The good thing about this was that she had time to get money together in the hope of helping the Jacobite cause.
Little did she realize was that she’d end up being tried as a witch. With her research beforehand, you would have thought she’d have been careful about being viewed as a witch, right?
Anyway, her role wasn’t just important for Claire. Geillis was essential to help Brianna learn the truth about time travel and her father. Up to this point, Brianna had been raised by Frank and believed that Frank was her father. She’d finally learned about Jamie but didn’t believe the story of time traveling. Seeing Geillis step through the stones made her believe.
May 1, 1971: Brianna goes through the stones
Jump forward three years and this day in Outlander history sees Brianna step through the stones. Armed with a newspaper clipping, she goes through to warn her parents that they’re going to die in a house fire.
In the novels, Brianna knew the exact date. In the show, she didn’t so she had to go through right away and not waste time collecting supplies.
This important event leads to a number of things happening. Brianna is raped by Bonnet, she marries Roger through a handfasting ceremony, and she finally finds her parents. Roger is Soloff to the Natives and Claire & Jamie have to find him. That’s just Book 4 in the series!
However, most importantly, Jamie gets to meet his daughter. It’s something he never expected he’d get to do.
May 1, 1721: James Alexander Malcolm MacKenzie Fraser is born
Of course, the most important event on this day in Outlander history is the birth of one James Alexander Malcolm MacKenzie Fraser. He was the third child born to Brian and Ellen Fraser and was the second son. His brother Willie was supposed to be the Laird of Lallybroch but he died young and that left it all to Jamie.
If only Jamie could have had the easier life he was supposed to get. Instead, Black Jack Randall reared his head and it put Jamie on a path of misery and heartache.
However, all this did happen for a reason. He met Claire, his soulmate. The two would marry – more as a way to keep Claire safe from the British – and it would start the journey that we know today.
