Jamie’s trust in Claire makes him my #ManCrushMonday this week
It would have been easy for Jamie to dismiss Claire’s words as those of a crazy person. His belief in Claire during Outlander Season 1, Episode 11 makes him my #ManCrushMonday this week.
It’s time for another #ManCrushMonday post. I don’t do them all the time, but this week I felt compelled to write about a moment in Outlander Season 1, Episode 11. While Claire annoyed me, I feel more in love with Jamie Fraser.
After saving Claire at the witch trials, she finally told him the full truth. All he’d asked for was an explanation for the smallpox vaccine on her arm after hearing from Geillis that it was a mark from the devil. Claire decided to tell him the full story – well, it all came spilling out.

Her words would have sounded like ones of a crazy person. Had we heard this story from someone we knew in the real world, we’d consider getting them committed. Yet Jamie made it clear that he believed her.
Throughout the tale, he asked some questions. He needed to understand specifics but at no point did he disbelieve anything. He didn’t question her sanity or whether she was a witch. Instead, he wholeheartedly believed her.
This was slightly different to the book’s storyline. In “Outlander,” Jamie believes that Claire believes in the stones and time travel. It’s not until he sees her at the stones and sees her disappearing from him that he fully trusts that she has come from the future. There wasn’t the time or the budget to do something as graphically amazing as the books depict, so Jamie had to believe right away.
Either way, Jamie still respected Claire’s thoughts and beliefs and it’s one of my favorite moments of the episode. For me, it showed the differences between the two characters. While Jamie accepted Claire for who she was, Claire often belittled Jamie’s (and the people of the time’s) views about illnesses, religion, and superstitious tales. It’s a shame that this wasn’t a turning point for Claire to respect others’ opinions and stories more, but that’s a different subject!
This moment showed Jamie for the man that he was. If Claire told him something out of the ordinary, he wouldn’t just dismiss it as make-believe. He would trust the words because he trusted her. Most men wouldn’t have believed Claire. They would have had her committed or burned as a witch, but Jamie was never like other men – of his time or the 20th century.
