5 best Claire moments in Outlander Season 4, Episode 2
2. Going toe-to-toe with Aunt Jocasta
While I’m not overly impressed with Claire’s attitude in the scene, I do enjoy seeing Aunt Jocasta and Claire going toe-to-toe. This is a chance for Jocasta to get to know more about her niece-in-law, the woman who will heiress to her fortune.
We got a glimpse of the scene in the sneak peek, but there was far more too it. Jocasta realizes that Claire is peculiar but also lively. In a sense, I get the feeling Jocasta knows that Claire is very much like her in a way, full of MacKenzie spirit even if Claire doesn’t want to admit it. In fact, there could be the hint that Claire is a descendant of Laoghaire.
And throughout the scene, Claire remains unapologetic for her views. She doesn’t back down against Jocasta, continuing to be a stubborn but also strong woman. I may not always agree with her but I do respect her personality.
1. The compassion she showed Rufus
In the end, Claire realized that she couldn’t save Rufus. No matter how much she wanted to, there was no way that she could protect this slave from the mob. So, she had to do the next best thing: make sure he died peacefully.
This end scene as she gave Rufus the poisoned tea reminded me so much of Outlander Season 1 during the hunt and Outlander Season 3 with Elias. Claire spoke kindly and softly, getting Rufus to think of happy memories. She asked about his childhood and what he and his sister would do.
While this scene was important to show that Claire still has that compassionate side, it was also important to give the slaves on the plantation some sense of humanity and life before being taken from their homes. Many movies and shows overlook this, helping to develop the white main character. However, the writers gave us something to feel more compassion and empathy for Rufus.
