Outlander Season 4, Episode 1 felt like a pilot episode of a series
Outlander Season 4, Episode 1 just didn’t fully work for me. There were great moments but also some dull, questionable moments. I’ve realized it’s because it felt like a pilot episode.
I remember watching the third season premiere last year and being excited, rewatching it a few times to see the changes and the effects. When Outlander Season 4, Episode 1 aired, I’d hoped to feel the same thing. However, it just wasn’t the greatest episode I’d watched.
There were some beautiful, funny, and excellent moments. However, overall, the episode fell flat. And I realized that it was because the whole episode felt like a pilot episode of TV.
In a pilot episode, a bulk of a story needs telling while introducing us to characters. It needs to set the stage for where various people are going and why they’re in one place.

Just look at the Outlander pilot. We got to meet Claire and Frank. There was the story of Samhain and the stones and then we got some flashes of what would happen to Claire thanks to Mrs. Graham. When Claire went through time, we met Jamie, Murtagh, Dougal, and Black Jack Randall.
During the pilot, there were flashes back to Frank telling Claire about the history of Scotland and ambushes, useful for Claire when she went to the past. Everything was neatly laid out to get Claire to Castle Leoch and start the real story.
And this brings me to Outlander Season 4, Episode 1. We got a quick rundown of the things that had happened after the season 3 finale. We learned what had happened to Fergus and Marsali, had a quick story on Hayes, figured out what Lesley was doing, met Rollo and Bonnet, and then got Claire and Jamie on their journey to Aunt Jocasta’s.
The real action came at the very end when Bonnet showed his real colors. Up to that point, there was the odd moment, but it really was just an episode to set the tale and set up the rest of the season. While premieres are for that, they often do it with a little more action. Outlander Season 3, Episode 1 managed it and it’s a shame the fourth season didn’t.
