Outlander Season 1, Episode 5 put Claire on the road with the MacKenzie men and introduced us to two new characters. Here are the five best lines from Rent.

We got to see Claire discovering the beautiful Highlands in Outlander Season 1, Episode 5. This episode also introduced us to two new characters: Ned and Willie. While there are moments of the episode I don’t like, there are plenty of lines that I love.

In fact, Rent has some standout moments and excellent lines. There are some that just offer some sort of secret to the men, while others are hilarious in the moment. There there are those that clearly mean far more.

With all that in mind, here are my five favorite lines from Outlander Season 1, Episode 5, titled “Rent.

I’ve got no argument with, even goats, although one of them ate my handkerchief last year. But I have given explicit instructions this year that we will not accept live pigs.

There’s clearly a backstory to this. I’d love to know what the live pigs did to Ned last year and why he was so dead-set against them. He was willing to accept goats, despite them eating his handkerchief, so there must have been something big that happened with the pigs. You just knew, though, that live pigs would be allowed as payment.

Bottoms up.

This line brings Claire’s time period out instantly. The women had already given her strange looks because she’s English–and they probably believe she’s an English spy too–but the looks turn dirtier and more confused with this line. The best thing is, Claire doesn’t even seem to notice there’s a problem. Or maybe she just chooses to ignore it!

I must say, you got a good head on your shoulders, and a tongue for argument as well. You’d make a fine advocate yerself. It’s a pity they don’t allow women to practice law.

I’ve always loved how diplomatic Ned can be. You can see why he’s such a good lawyer and why Colum employs him. After all, Colum could gain others if Ned wasn’t so good. This line is important, though, for me. It shows that Ned is able to keep a poker face when he needs. Claire is onto them about something but she’s not quite figured out the money is for the Jacobite cause. It’s not possible to really see that Ned is keeping that part quiet.

However, he diverts the topic once he gets a chance. He commends her brain and skill. How many others thought about the future, knowing women would be practicing law in a couple of centuries?

The next morning as I watched them pack, I saw the men in a different light. Not criminals, but rebels.

It takes Claire a little too long for my liking to figure out that the MacKenzies are Jacobites and that’s what the money is for, but her realization the next day is certainly poignant. We get the flashes of Culloden, specifically the MacKenzie headstone. This is a chance for her to realize that many of these would die in battle–little did she know that only one would die at Culloden and not actually in the battle (according to the TV show, that is).

This is still an important moment for the whole show. We get the knowledge and confirmation that the Battle of Culloden will become important later in Outlander.

We can insult you, but god help any other man that does.

Murtagh always states it like it is and this is one of those lines that is just perfect for the moment. It also shows the way Claire has grown on the group of men. They respect her at times, even if they’re still wary. What I wonder is whether they only stood up for her because she was a guest of the MacKenzies. Is it possible that they actually just liked her and believed she needed standing up for in this moment?
