Outlander Season 4 will see the return of the knitted shawls
Outlander Season 4 filming may be over, but we have plenty of time to analyze photos released. One of the latest behind the scenes photos shows us that knitted shawls are making a comeback and it’s about time!
One of my favorite parts of Outlander is definitely the costumes. They are so intricately made and suitable for the time periods Claire is in. This part of any period drama isn’t cheap but there are no liberties taken when it comes to the style and the repurposing–or the amount of time just one item will be worn. My favorite costumes have been the Scottish ones and the knitted shawls are part of the reason for that.
I’m psyched that the knitted shawls are making a comeback. This isn’t that surprising since there were plenty of Scots who moved to the Colonies. They would have brought their fashion from Britain, meaning knitted shawls were a common part.
The shawl was also part of earlier promo photos and in one of the teasers. What is likely taken from the Outlander Season 4 premiere, Claire and Jamie travel back from the hanging of a friend. Claire is wearing a shawl in that.

In fact, the shawl looks very similar to the latest image in the tweet from Terry Dresbach. Claire seems to be repurposing her clothing again, which is certainly awesome. We already know that women and men repurposed their clothing and Dresbach has kept this reality throughout the series, so it’s understandable that we get to see it again.
The shawls are also similar to those used in Scotland. There’s a slightly different color, but they look to be made in very much the same fashion, which would connect to the time period realistically. Once again, we can be excited about the costumes.
These shawls have become a popular part of cosplaying Outlander. After all, Claire’s 18th-century Scottish clothing is among the most favored and memorable items. But it’s not just for the cosplaying. The knitted shawls are practical and beautiful and Outlander has helped to bring them back into fashion. Season 4 will continue that.
