Diana Gabaldon shares excitement about Tim Downie as Governor Tryon
When Diana Gabaldon learned Tim Downie had been cast as Governor William Tryon in Outlander Season 4, she was shocked in a good way. It turns out she had no idea it was him while watching the dailies.
It’s no secret that Diana Gabaldon gets to see the dailies for Outlander. She’s a consultant on the series and the dailies keep her in the loop. This means she gets to see the actors before we even know they’ve been cast. Well, it turns out that seeing them didn’t help her realize one particular actor had been cast in Outlander Season 4.
When she learned that Tim Downie was Governor Tryon in the fourth season, Gabaldon was shocked in a good way. She’d spent time watching him on the dailies and hadn’t realized it was him! It just goes to show the effort and time that goes into the makeup and costuming to make these actors look the part.

Gabaldon decided that the mustache and wig used in the series is the reason she didn’t recognize the actor. It makes me wonder if we’ll recognize the actors when we see them on the screen. Will we realize who they are? After all, others have looked different on screen than they have in real life due to makeup and costumes.
This should be a good thing for those who have become invested in the characters in the novels. There have been complaints over the years about the characters not quite meeting expectations, but it looks like Governor Tryon will. Gabaldon was clearly happy about the character portrayal enough not to realize who the actor actually was.
