Outlander Season 4 has added Craig McGinlay to the series as Andrew MacNeill. What can fans expect from the character?
There are spoilers in this post. These spoilers are from “Drums of Autumn,” which is the fourth book and the book that Outlander Season 4 is based on.
The Outlander fandom was on fire earlier this week. Craig McGinlay was added to the cast, with plenty of comments about his looks. He certainly makes the perfect Scotsman, which isn’t surprising considering the actor is from Glasgow. As soon as he was announced as part of the cast, fans wanted to know who he would play.

McGinlay will take on the role of Andrew MacNeill. This is a relatively minor character in the book, so it will be interesting to see if the show is going to make some changes to make him more prominent. Of course, the deal about the casting could have just been to keep the show in the minds of the fans. With such a long break, Starz and the production team will have to release the information in bits and pieces.
For those who haven’t read the books, you may want to know as much about the character as possible. This is the piece that will give you enough to get you ready for Andrew’s appearance in Outlander Season 4.
He’s a plantation owner
Andrew is one of the plantation owners close to Cape Fear in “Drums of Autumn.” He’s also prominent within the Scottish community in the area, so it’s not surprising that he has some interaction with Claire and Jamie.
When there’s an incident at the sawmill, he takes Jamie and Claire to the location. That incident is the lynching of a slave, due to be executed. Davie Byrnes decides to deal with the slave, rather than wait for the authorities.
Helps Lizzie locate Jamie Fraser
Lizzie Wemyss becomes an important character in “Drums of Autumn” and has direct contact with Andrew MacNeill. As handmaiden to Brianna, she eventually starts looking for Jamie. Because of a previous dealing with Jamie, Andrew is able to lead Lizzie to Jamie.
This does eventually lead to Jamie finding out about Roger Wakefield, but not for the positive reasons you’d hope!
He has a family
Andrew’s family members play a small part in the book. It’s unclear whether they’ll be included at all, as their parts are so minor. He has two spinster sisters, Abby and Nettie, who will likely be included. His son is the main questionable one.
Donald MacNeill goes to Farquard Campbell about the sawmill incident. This leads to the execution of Rufus.
