With season 2 of Outlander in production, Graham McTavish spoke on a panel about how he feels about his character, Dougal, is determined to do this season. We also look at the ramifications of the deal Dougal, and Claire made in season 1. We also talk about what Graham brought to the character Dougal.

The last time we saw Dougal MacKenzie (Graham McTavish) in season 1, he was hedging his bet Claire would not be able to get Jamie out of Wentworth prison in the episode “The Search”. I am sure he was disappointed to hear the news from his men found Jamie alive, and Claire is with him. If he had won the deal with Claire, they would have been engaged to be married. Odds are Claire would have never made it to the church altar and would have tried her luck getting back to Craigh na Dun. It is yet known if Jamie will ever find out about the deal reached with his wife and uncle.

Production of season 2 Outlander is underway; Graham spoke on a panel at Fan Expo (via Spoiler TV) about his characters Dougal’s “good and evil” side coming out.

"“He’s a great character because he is complicated. He is manipulative and has his own agenda – to restore the Stewart monarchy – but he also has this love for Jaime – even while he’s plotting to kill him, he saves him,” he said “He’s also capable of great compassion.”"

We will see how much sympathy he will show Claire and Jamie when Season 2 starts April 2016. Our heroes hidden agenda to stop the Jacobite rebellion will be opposite of what Dougal will want. While he loves his nephew and cares for Claire, it will not stop him from his goal of getting the Stewart King on the throne.

The television show and Graham McTavish deserves applause for giving the loathsome character Dougal more depth. In the books, he was just a one-dimensional character. You almost feel sorry for Dougal on the television show. He can’t have Claire. He can’t have Geillis openly. He can’t acknowledge his child he had out-of-wedlock. He can’t be laird of the clan as long as his brother is alive. One could see why he is such sour old man all the time. If producers stay true to the book, Dragonfly in Amber, I will not look for Dougal when Claire and Jamie arrive France. The Dougal centric episodes will come at the back part of the season. We all know when Dougal comes back, its will be all kinds of action.
