While initially, The Summer I Turned Pretty season 3 wasn’t announced as the final season, eventually, Prime Video confirmed this. Of course, it’s led to a lot of questions about why this is. Why would Amazon want to end one of its top teen shows?
Amazon hasn’t officially given a reason why the season will be the last. We can work out why based on the fact that this show is based on a book trilogy by Jenny Han.

3 seasons for 3 books in The Summer I Turned Pretty
The biggest reason for The Summer I Turned Pretty season 3 being the last is likely due to the fact that it’s based on a book trilogy. If there are three books, then it make sense to have three seasons.
Had the first two seasons changed around the book storyline, then we could have seen the series pushing for more seasons. However, the first season covered the first book and then the second season covered the second book. So, with that in mind, it makes sense for the third season to cover the third book.
While we could have seen Amazon push for more to the story as it’s a popular show, it doesn’t make sense when the source material comes to an end. Fans of the source material don’t want to see a continuation, unless there is another book afterward to develop a season from.

The 3 books wrap up Belly’s story in The Summer I Turned Pretty
There doesn’t really need to be more to the story in the world of the books. The three books see Belly go from a high schooler to finishing up college and getting married. She grows up throughout the books, although, admittedly, not in the best of ways and not completely. There is still some maturing to go!
That being said, the books wrap up her story with the two brothers. We find out which brother she ends up with, and there’s a hope for a happy ever after with one of those brothers.
For the story to continue, more drama would be needed. That could lead to frustration for fans of Belly and the brother she ends up with (I don’t want to say who to avoid spoilers for the final season of The Summer I Turned Pretty). After all, drama means relationships end and then people get back together. We just don’t need any more of that for Belly.
This doesn’t mean the world cant continue in another way. To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before continued with XO, Kitty on Netflix, so maybe there is a character The Summer I Turned Pretty that Amazon could see a show continuation via.
The Summer I Turned Pretty airs on Wednesdays on Prime Video.
