Now that there’s a premiere date for Outlander season 8, it’s possible to look at when the series is likely to come to an end. Of course, STARZ hasn’t confirmed anything just yet, but I think all Sassenachs know how STARZ runs its Outlander schedule now.
There are 10 episodes in Outlander season 8. This makes it the second-shortest season of the series, after Outlander season 6, which coincidentally also premiered on March 6 of its year!
When could the Outlander series premiere air on STARZ?
We know that STARZ loves to put on a break somewhere during the season, and this is usually just before the finale. There have been times, such as during season 4, when the break was put on in the middle of the season, but most of the time, we get a one-week break before the finale airs.
As annoying as this is, it’s all about business for STARZ. That extra week can help to extend the subscription numbers by an extra month! Of course, STARZ is going to want to do that, especially with the split from Lionsgate.
So, with this in mind, we’re looking at the Outlander series finale airing on Friday, May 22.
Again, this is all speculation. Maybe STARZ will be nice to us and not put on a break in the middle of the season. We can hope, right?
Look out for Outlander season 8 on Netflix U.S. in 2028
This also tells us when we are expecting to see Outlander season 8 join Netflix. That is, if the agreement between STARZ and Netflix will still stand at that point.
The current deal is that the show heads to Netflix two years after the finale airs on STARZ. So, we’re looking at 2028, and if the Outlander season 8 finale airs on Friday, May 22, then we’re looking at the entire season being available on Netflix on May 22, 2028. That is a long wait, but it will always be on STARZ until then! We don’t see this series being removed from STARZ like other shows, such as Hightown, have been.
Outlander season 8 is officially the end of the TV series. While there will be 10 books in Claire and Jamie’s story, the novels have been condensed and the ending has been reworked to fit the TV show. While this is going to be disappointing to the book-first and book purists out there, the costs of making a TV show are going up considerably, and it’s hard to keep a period drama on the air. At least we’re getting an ending!
There’s also still the prequel series in the work, as Outlander: Blood of My Blood season 2 is still in the works. While there is a chance that the season could arrive at the end of 2026, I’m still looking at early 2027 as a premiere for the season.
Outlander season 8 will premiere on Friday, March 6 on STARZ.
