Miss Scarlet season 5 has began, and a recent episode will make you wonder about the year the series is set. Let’s go back to the start of Miss Scarlet and The Duke to determine when in the Victorian era the series is set.
The Victorian era covers decades. This covers when Queen Victoria sat on the throne, dating from 1837 to 1901. So, any show that is set in the Victorian era could be at any point. Of course, most of the time, the era is linked to the later end of the 1800s, and that’s the case with this series.
Miss Scarlet and The Duke is initially set in the 1880s
When the series first began, PBS made it clear that the show would be set in 1882 London. The series is set at a time when things were changing for the women. They wanted more in life, and we see that in Eliza Scarlet.
This is a time when women were still the property of men. With the death of Eliza’s dad, she was left penniless and in trouble. She would either need to marry a man just for stability, or she would need to risk it all with her late father’s business. She chose the latter, and she ended up making the most of it by turning to Scotland Yard to be hired for her cases.
When is Miss Scarlet season 5 set?
If we work with the idea that each season runs for a year in the world, it means that season 5 is set in 1887. This is an important year, as the series is sure to have to cover a very big story in the next season.
In 1888, Jack the Ripper terrorized London. Ripper Street covers the aftermath of this well. The fact that Jack the Ripper was never caught meant that people always feared that he would attack again. It took time to settle.
Miss Scarlet could find itself having to deal with the investigation into who Jack the Ripper is. What could this mean for Eliza and Blake considering they will want to find the killer?
Miss Scarlet airs on Sundays at 8/7c on PBS.
