William, Duke of Wellington has left the country in Miss Scarlet season 5. He did give Eliza a chance to go with him, but she chose against it. Why would she do such a thing?
The Miss Scarlet season 5 premiere told us that William had decided to remain in New York. He’d been given the opportunity of a permanent job with the New York Police Department, that offered the opportunity of a promotion to superintendent. There was no way he could pass that opportunity up.
He did want Eliza to move with him, though. He offered her the chance to move as his wife, but Eliza decided to turn it down.
Eliza didn’t want what being William’s wife would mean in Miss Scarlet
Eliza shared everything with Ivy after reading William’s letter. Ivy immediately understood why Eliza wouldn’t move to New York to marry William. As much as Eliza loves the man, she didn’t want what being his wife would mean.
As the wife of the superintendent, she wouldn’t be able to be a private detective. That would mean giving up a career that she has made her own. While she may not have wanted to do this career at first, only taking up her late father’s practice to avoid being destitute or forced into a marriage she didn’t want, she has come to love the work.
William would have surely understood this. After all, while he and Eliza knew each other from before, it was as she grew her business as a private detective that he really got to know her. This was the Eliza he fell in love with, and if he loves her, then he would want her to be happy with the life that she had found herself in.
While William could talk to Eliza about some of his cases, he wouldn’t be able to have her work them. He’d know that wouldn’t make her happy, so probably isn’t too offended that she chose not to move to New York with him.
