Rook’s Rest was a disaster for the Blacks in House of the Dragon, but it ended up being just as bad for the Greens. King Aegon is forever changed, and we didn’t really get much of an update on Sunfyre. It looks like the Season 2 finale confirmed the dragon’s fate.
The only update we got was from Rhaenyra, who said that Sunfyre was dead. At least, we could assume that she was talking about Sunfyre and not Meleys. However, the Greens didn’t mention Sunfyre after the disaster of Rook’s Rest.
Aegon confirms Sunfyre is dead in House of the Dragon
I felt so sorry for Sunfyre in the episode. He wasn’t ready for battle, and he had a terrible rider to go into battle with. Aegon was drunk and thought that he was indestructible. Instead, Aegon’s actions led to him being horribly burned and injured and Sunfyre falling from the sky.
In the House of the Dragon Season 2 finale, Aegon tells Larys Strong that Sunfyre is dead. It seems that this has confirmed the golden dragon’s fate, and it’s heartbreaking when this could have been avoided.
Sunfyre didn’t die at Rook’s Rest in Fire & Blood
This is a change to the book storyline, though. Sunfyre was left seriously injured after Rook’s Rest. Meleys had half torn Sunfyre’s wing from him, and that is something that we saw happen in the fight at Rook’s Rest in House of the Dragon. Sunfyre was left unable to fly for some time, and Criston Cole and his men remained to feed him sheep after he fed on all the bodies left behind after Rook’s Rest.
Sunfyre does get one more battle in. This is after Aegon flees King’s Landing, and it happens at Dragonstone. Sunfyre is then crucial for the end of Rhaenyra.
It looks like these storylines will go to someone else in House of the Dragon. Of course, it’s possible that Cole didn’t tell everyone that Sunfyre was still alive. Or maybe Sunfyre was presumed dead after everything went down. We could find out that Sunfyre is still out there somewhere, allowing Aegon to be reunited with him in House of the Dragon Season 3.
