What happens to Sunfyre after Rook's Rest in Fire & Blood?
It’s easy to forget that the dragons in House of the Dragon have stories of their own. That’s certainly the case for Sunfyre, the dragon of King Aegon II.
Sunfyre went down during the Battle of Rook’s Rest. He was no match for Meleys, who managed to grab Sunfyre by one of the wings. This is important for what happens to Sunfyre next, especially based on Fire & Blood by George R.R. Martin.
While some elements of the book aren’t true—history written by the victor—some are. We’re sure to see Sunfyre’s next part of the story play out similar to the way it’s told by the Maester in the book.
Sunfyre is likely unable to fly in House of the Dragon
In the book, we’re told that Sunfyre’s wing is badly damaged. It’s ripped half off, which makes sense after the fight that we did see in the air. Sunfyre is unable to fly due to the damage, and he is too heavy to be carried back to King’s Landing.
So, Sunfyre is left at Rook’s Rest, where Ser Criston Cole orders people to stay to protect him. Sunfyre initially eats the bodies of the fallen soldiers, and then Aegon’s men bring Sunfyre sheep and other livestock for Sunfyre to eat.
This gives Sunfyre time to heal. The wing heals at an odd angle, but it’s enough for Sunfyre to be able to fly again. This allows Sunfyre to get to Dragonstone, which is where Aegon is heading by the time he heals. Yes, Aegon survives, but it’s not without major injuries.
We will get to see another battle for Sunfyre if the show sticks to that book storyline. Sadly, that is set to be his last, as he is badly injured again. He does get a royal feast before his death, though. I can’t see that part changing due to the story Game of Thrones has already told us.
