We Were the Lucky Ones told the story of a Polish Jewish family separated by World War II. By the end of the series, we learned if and how they came back together as a family. Could we see more of the tale?
We know that life didn’t stop for the survivors of World War II. The end of the war didn’t bring an end to Nazis. There is still Jewish hate out there. That opens the door for the stories of Jewish families to continue, which could open the door for We Were the Lucky Ones Season 2 to happen.
However, it’s highly unlikely that Hulu will change its decision on the miniseries billing. There’s no need for this particular series to land more seasons.
The story of the book was told in We Were the Lucky Ones
The series is based on a true story, but it’s also based on a fictional novel by Georgia Hunter. Hunter is the granddaughter of Addy Kurc, and she wrote her novel based on stories that had been told by various members of her family. There were gaps, so there was some fictional licensing taken, but the bulk of the story is real.
We Were the Lucky Ones told that story from start to finish. There wasn’t anything at the end of the book that would require another season. So, it would mean the show would need to find a way to go ahead of the source material. Sure, this has happened with other shows in the past, but it doesn’t mean that it needs to happen.
The series told us of the lives after the war
If you watched the series finale, you will know that there is no need for We Were the Lucky Ones Season 2. There are cards at the end that tell us what happened to the family. We even got pictures of the various members of the family.
We learned about where the family members moved to, and we learned about children and grandchildren. We know that the family still finds a way to get back together for big events, especially Passover.
While there are sure to be moments of drama and heartache—we saw how Herta struggled with the quiet of living after so many years fighting for survival—they don’t necessarily need to be shown. We experienced the trauma and fear that the siblings went through, and how they didn’t stop the fight to reunite.
So, I don’t expect to see We Were the Lucky Ones Season 2. There are other stories to tell out there.
