If you’re in the mood for historical fiction, Hulu has you covered at the end of the month. We Were the Lucky Ones is the latest World War II story to watch.
There is no shortage of World War II content out there. Some of them focus on the soldiers at war, while others focus on the stories back home; of everyday people trying to fight against oppression. We Were the Lucky Ones is one of the latter.
Joey King and Logan Lerman star as Halina and Addy Kurc. They are two members of a Polish Jewish family torn apart as the Nazis invade Europe.
What is We Were the Lucky Ones about?
The series follows the Kurc family, desperate to reunite with each other when the world is against them. Travel for them is a death sentence, especially if they travel into Nazi-occupied areas. However, they refuse to sit back and do nothing while other members of their family are potentially on their way to concentration camps or are on the run to the middle of nowhere.
The trailer puts a focus on King’s and Lerman’s characters. However, there is also a lot about other members of the Kurc family, who will do whatever it takes to survive.
Is We Were the Lucky Ones based on a true story?
The series is based on true accounts of the Kurc family. It’s also based on a book by Georgia Hunter, which is based on the stories from the family.
The Kurc family is simply trying to live a normal and happy life in the spring of 1939 when the Germans get closer. Talk within the family is supposed to be about romances, babies, and travel. Instead, it ends up being about the horrors that the family will not be able to escape.
They are all separated through chance, life choices, and the Nazis. One sibling is forced into exile, and another is working grueling hours in the ghetto and one is hiding in plain sight. They try to find out what is going on with each other, but they write into the void and they have to stop in the hope of just surviving and seeing each other at the end.
