Is We Were the Lucky Ones based on a true story?
If you’re ready for another period drama, it’s going to be about We Were the Lucky Ones. This is another story set during World War II, covering the story of a Polish Jewish family.
Think you’ve heard this story before? There are a lot of stories about Jewish people who faced the atrocities of the Nazis. Each of those stories deserve to be told, and it’s important to focus on the real stories of people who went through the worst of it. History isn’t designed to be liked but to be learned from.
So, is We Were the Lucky Ones based on a true story? Is this something that really happened to the Jewish people in Poland?
We Were the Lucky Ones is loosely based on a true story
This is one of those yes and no answers. We Were the Lucky Ones is actually based on a book of the same name by Georgia Hunter. The book is loosely based on a true story.
It follows a fictionalized telling of the Kurc family. This Polish Jewish family was separated during World War II due to various life circumstances and the events of the War. They made one promise to themselves. They would reunite and find each other. And so they went on a journey against the odds to fight for their own survivals while finding each other.
Of course, it’s hard to bring a fully true story when it comes to something like this. There may be individuals who are no longer around to be able to tell their version of events and so some of them need to be created for drama and story. We saw that with A Small Light when it came to Jan Gies’s storyline as Jan never shared everything that he did.
We Were the Lucky Ones premieres on Hulu on Thursday, March 28.
