Outlander snubbed once more when it comes to the Emmys
In a tale that Outlander fans are getting used to, the series has been snubbed in the Emmy nominations once more. Fans are outraged again. Is there a reason for the snub?
Part of me does wonder if someone somewhere has annoyed people within the Emmys. However, it’s more likely other factors involved.
Did Starz put Outlander forward for contention?
The series was put forward for seven considerations. They were:
Sam Heughan for Best Lead Actor
John Bell for Best Supporting Actor
Richard Ranking for Best Supporting Actor
Charles Vandervaart for Best Supporting Actor
Sophie Skelton for Best Supporting Actress
Mark Lewis for Best Guest Actor
No, the show wasn’t put forward for Best Drama Series. Caitriona Balfe wasn’t put forward for Best Supporting Actress, according to the list Gold Derby shared. So, technically, the show and Balfe weren’t snubbed by the Emmys. They were snubbed by Starz itself.
Why is Outlander constantly snubbed?
The last time Outlander was nominated for an Emmy was back in 2018 when it was nominated for Best Costume Design. The series has constantly been overlooked since then.
The lack of nominations likely isn’t anything to do with snubs, but more to do with the quality of other shows. We just have to look at some of the shows up for nominations, including Shogun and Fallout. There are so many great shows across streaming platforms now that it is hard to compete. And if you look at the Emmys now, it’s mostly streaming shows that are getting the attention.
Another part of me thinks it’s to do with the timing. Outlander Season 7A was released in summer 2023. Many shows that have been nominated released episodes in 2024. The shows were fresher on the minds of those voting for the nominations.
Then there’s the buzz around specific shows. Romance and fantasy shows don’t tend to get a lot of attention, and those are the two genres that Outlander initially fits into. Bridgerton did get a couple of nominations, but this is one of Netflix’s biggest shows. Outlander just isn’t as big as many of the other shows that were nominated. They don’t bring in the same audiences or get the same online attention. This could lead to some of the Emmy voters not really knowing much about it.
Yes, it’s disappointing when our favorite show is snubbed in the awards show, but isn’t this something that we’re used to? Plus, if you’re anything like me, you don’t really care about the awards anyway. Awards have never told me what is quality TV. I usually like the shows that never have a chance of winning awards.
