What to expect for Aegon Targaryen in House of the Dragon Season 3 based on the book
Aegon Targaryen proved why he shouldn’t be king in House of the Dragon Season 2. He wasn’t ready for it, and he made a poor, drunken decision at Rook’s Rest.
For half of the season, Aegon was bedridden and in serious pain. In the finale, he questioned what it was all for when he realized that Rhaenyra was likely to swoop in and take King’s Landing. It looked like he was ready for death until Larys Strong convinced him to keep fighting.
So, at the end of House of the Dragon Season 2, we watched as Larys and Aegon escaped King’s Landing. It’s not clear where they’re going, but we can look at Fire & Blood by George R.R. Martin to get an idea of what’s to come next.
Aegon should head to Dragonstone in House of the Dragon Season 3
With Rhaenyra heading to King’s Landing, it leaves the Targaryen ancestral home left open. That’s where Aegon is set to go to, especially as he learns that Sunfyre is there. It’s not clear if Sunfyre is even actually alive in House of the Dragon, though. Aegon believes the dragon to be dead, but we didn’t see that death confirmed on screen.
Aegon flies on Sunfyre in the Fall of Dragonstone. Sunfyre gets a last fight against Moondancer, Baela’s dragon. Moondancer is killed, but Sunfyre falls to the Earth. To avoid him being killed in the fall, Aegon jumps from his dragon. It shatters both of his legs, and he is left unable to walk for the rest of his life.
We know Helaena has seen Aegon rule again but in a wooden chair. This is what the prophecy is aluding to.
Sunfyre kills Rhaenyra in Fire & Blood
One of the reasons I don’t believe Sunfyre is actually dead is because he still has a big part to play. Not only does he kill Moondancer, but he also needs to kill Rhaenyra.
After six months in King’s Landing, Rhaenyra flees and heads back to Dragonstone, not realizing that Aegon is there. She is captured and fed to Sunfyre. Rhaenyra’s son, Aegon the Younger, watches as it happens. While Ser Alfred Broome argues that Prince Aegon should also be killed, Aegon II decides not to do it.
Aegon isn’t able to get straight back to King’s Landing, though. The Velaryon fleet surrounds Dragonstone, and Aegon can no longer fly Sunfyre back. The fight against Moondancer prevents Sunfyre flying again, and the poor dragon does eventually die at Dragonstone.
Aegon finds a way back to King’s Landing
This next part is likely to happen during House of the Dragon Season 4.
Aegon proves that he has learned from past mistakes. He offers House Velaryon a pardon, but Alyn Velaryon needs to swear fealty to him and allow him to cross Blackwater Bay.
It starts the turn against Rhaenyra’s claim. With her dead, that’s not all that surprising. Corlys joins Team Green and becomes the Master of Ships. This happens just as Alyn prepares to attack Dragonstone and Aegon prepares to execute Baela.
Aegon is able to get back to King’s Landing, but he is never able to sit on the Iron Throne again since he can’t use his legs.
It’s not a happy ending for Aegon, though. He is found dead by poison, suggesting that someone close to him kills him. The Iron Throne passes to the last remaining Targaryen heir. Aegon the Younger rules and marries his uncle’s daughter, Jaehaera, combining the two sides.
