Arch Bug is confirmed as a character in Outlander: Blood of My Blood. We’ve already come to know him in the flagship series. It’s time to get to know a younger version of the character.
Terence Rae will play a younger Arch Bug. He is descripted as the bodyguard to Clan Grant in the press release from Starz. That matches what we have been told about the Bugs in the flagship series. He was close to the Grants, and he helped to arrange the separation of the French gold at the time of Culloden.
Don’t expect the same man that we know him as now. There’s a chance that we’ll see a slightly less jaded man in Outlander: Blood of My Blood.
Who is Arch Bug in Outlander: Blood of My Blood?
Arch Bug was loyal to the Grant family for the time that he was there. He was there for when the French gold was separated between Dougal, Hector Cameron, and Malcolm Grant. However, after Culloden, Arch and his wife, Murdina, got out of Scotland and they headed to the Colonies. Eventually, they came across Jamie, who offered them a place at Fraser’s Ridge.
The man we have come to know is jaded. That’s not surprising considering everything that he had witnessed.
This is a man who is old enough to have fought in the first Jacobite rebellion. He then experienced everything life threw at him after the second Jacobite rebellion. Despite his loyalty to Clan Grant, he and his wife ended up with nothing and they had to rely on Jamie’s willingness to take them in. However, they believed that they should have more, and eventually stole from Jocasta Cameron when they figured out where Hector and Jocasta had hidden the gold.
We’re picking up shortly after the first Jacobite rebellion in Outlander: Blood of My Blood. That would suggest we won’t have such a jaded man. This is a man who is still loyal to the clan. He hasn’t been part of the collection of the French gold for Malcolm yet, and he hasn’t experienced the English coming in and destroying the Scottish way of life.
There’s no mention of Murdina in this casting either. We could see a man before he marries Murdina. We don’t know how long they were married for before getting to the Ridge from what I can remember, so it’s possible that we’ll see a bit of their courtship, as well.
I just don’t expect to see the same man that we know of already. Part of me wondered if we’ll get something similar to the way The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes gave us a very different President Snow to the one we’d come to know in The Hunger Games.
