After spending the majority of Outlander season 7 part 2 apart, Brianna realized where Roger and Buck had gone. With her kids in tow, she went through the stones, and they were swiftly reunited. Of course, that meant a decision to make. Where would they all go from here?

The Outlander season 8 teaser trailer makes it clear what’s going to happen. We don’t even need the books to tell us the storyline!

Brianna and Roger are back in the 1770s on Outlander season 8

From the teaser, we can tell that Roger and Brianna must decide to go back to Claire and Jamie’s time. We get a glimpse of them wearing clothing from that time period, as they watch a fire burn. As we’ve mentioned at claireandjamie.com before, this is clearly a hint that a heartbreaking arc is going to happen on Outlander season 8, but Bree and Roger will be part of it, unlike in the books.

While there are no hints of Mandy and Jem, we can certainly believe that they’ll be around somewhere. It’s possible that they are back home at Fraser’s Ridge rather than in what is potentially Wilmington.

There are also no hints of Buck being in the past with them. In the novels, Buck presumably stays in 1739, but there is no confirmation or mention of this or even a discussion about the conversation they all had. I had hoped that this could change in the show, as Buck became such a positive presence on the series, but it could have meant too many characters to fit into the final season.

Why wouldn’t Bree and Roger head back to the 1980s?

Of course, there is a question over why Bree and Roger wouldn’t take Mandy and Jem back to the 1980s. After all, they’d bought Lallybroch, and they were working on fixing it up. So, why wouldn’t they want to go back there?

This is linked to the danger in the time period. Rob Cameron is still after Jem, as we saw in the attack at Lallybroch. So, the MacKenzies won’t feel safe there. It’s strange to think that the 1770s could end up being the safest time period for the MacKenzies on Outlander season 8, but that’s the way it seems to be.

That is, unless the shows go with a wild book storyline — that we still haven’t gained any closure over, as the storyline will continue into Book 10. It involves a time travel, potential plastic surgery, and a continued threat against Jem.

Outlander season 8 will premiere on Friday, March 6 on STARZ.
