As we close in on the Outlander: Blood of My Blood premiere, STARZ has treated us to the titles of each of the 10 episodes. That means it’s time to speculate on their meanings.
The titles of Outlander episodes always hint at things to come in the story. Now, there have been times that the titles have been leaked and then changed, such as the infamous “Turtle Soup” title which ended up not making it as the episode title in Outlander season 3 in the end. However, with STARZ officially releasing the titles, we don’t expect them to change.
Take a look at the Outlander: Blood of My Blood titles
STARZ shared a post on the show’s official social media channels, using the beautiful backdrop of Scotland and creating a title card similar to the way Outlander has done in the past. Take a look at the post:
The titles are:
Episode # | Episode Title |
---|---|
1 | Providence |
2 | S.W.A.K. (Sealed With a Kiss) |
3 | School of the Moon |
4 | A Soldier's Heart |
5 | Needfire |
6 | Birthright |
7 | Luceo Non Uro |
8 | A Virtuous Woman |
9 | Breamar |
10 | Something Borrowed |
What do the Outlander prequel titles mean?
It’s hard to guess some of the titles for Outlander: Blood of My Blood as we don’t have much in the way of source material to work with. While Diana Gabaldon is working on an Ellen and Brian prequel novel, she has repeatedly said she isn’t interested in writing about Claire’s parents. Also, the book isn’t one that she’s actively working on as Outlander Book 10 has taken over as the main project.
However, there are a couple of titles that do stand out, such as the finale, which is titled “Something Borrowed.” This is a line from the wedding poem “Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue,” so the title does hint that we’ll see a wedding during the finale.
The series premiere is titled “Providence,” which is actually the title of an Outlander season 4 episode. In that episode, Roger was in the Mohawk village, and he had a chance to escape but he went back to help the priest, who was going to be burned alive. I can’t make out what it could involve in Outlander: Blood of My Blood, though.

I get a sense that “S.W.A.K.” is going to be about letters that Henry and Julia send each other. We know from the trailer for the series that Henry is a soldier in World War I, and the two write to each other while Henry is in the trenches. Those letters are sure to be “Sealed With a Kiss.” There is also a title “Soldier’s Heart,” which also likely links to Henry’s story.
The episode titled “Birthright” could be linked to Ellen and Brian’s story. It’s possible that this is connected to Brian being the illegitimate son of Simon Fraser, noting that he doesn’t have much of a birthright, but that Ellen comes from a legitimate and large clan. I would hazard a guess that “A Virtuous Woman” is linked to Ellen’s story, as she would be viewed as virtuous up until she runs away with Brian Fraser.

The title "Luceo Non Uro" is Latin, and it's the motto of Clan MacKenzie. With that in mind, there's sure to be a heavy focus on Ellen MacKenzie and her family in this episode.
The release of the titles is certainly making me more excited about Outlander: Blood of My Blood.
Outlander: Blood of My Blood premieres on Friday, Aug. 8 on STARZ.
