Shortly after the Miss Scarlet season 5 finale, PBS announced that Evan McCabe would leave the series.It would mean losing Detective Fitzroy, who has been a loyal member of Scotland Yard from the beginning of the series, and we’ll certainly miss him.
The reason for the exit? McCabe had landed a role with The Royal Shakespeare Company, and couldn’t turn it down. We couldn’t be more thrilled for him on a personal level, even if it means no more Fitzroy. At least the series had time to work out an exit for him, and it didn’t disappoint.
Where is Detective Fitzroy on Miss Scarlet season 6?
It didn’t take long for us to learn where Fitzroy is on the series. As Detective Willows joined the team, Inspector Blake explained that Fitzroy had gained a promotion. In fact, Fitzroy was the one to initially interview Willows for the job, indicating that he didn’t get it just because of the shift in personnel at Scotland Yard.
Fitzroy has moved to Birmingham, where he has landed the position of Senior Detective. He certainly deserves it after all the work that he has done with Scotland Yard. It wasn’t like he was going to be able to move up the ranks too much in the London location, so moving to another city, where there is still plenty of crime, makes a lot of sense.
Detective Phelps has also moved to another location
In the same conversation, we learned that Detective Phelps had also moved on. He will no longer stalk the halls of Scotland Yard, landing a job at one of the London police stations. It turns out that it’s one Willows has friends at, so he has kept up with what’s going on there.
When Blake asked for Willows about how Phelps is doing, he initially responded with “pretty good.” Of course, Blake knows Phelps well enough to know that that is not true, but Willows is new and won’t be all that honest. When Blake offers him that chance to speak freely, he shares that he’s a “character.” That is something we can all agree on.
What I am curious about is why Willows didn’t share too much about his personal life when asked. He mentions that he has a teething baby at home, but when Blake asks about a wife, he just says “it’s complicated.” At the end of the episode, we learn that Willows is living with his sister, and it’s her new baby he’s helping to look after. There would have been nothing wrong in sharing that.
