With the Game of Thrones universe all connected, trying to work out how everyone is related can be difficult. After all, there tends to be hundreds of years between the shows, and that’s certainly the case with House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

In the trailer for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, we see some Targaryens manetioned and even seen on the screen. They are still on the Iron Throne, which means this takes place before the events of Game of Thrones. However, it’s also around 100 years after House of the Dragon.

The last of the dragons has long past, although there are still some who live who remember the last one. So how does the Targaryen line connect?

The Targaryen line is directly linked to Rhaenyra on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

The new series may be set after the life of Rhaenyra Targaryen, but her lineage does manage to live on. Now this will lead to some potential spoilers for House of the Dragon if you haven’t read Fire & Blood by George R.R. Martin or A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. However, all the information has been wildly available for all to find.

Rhaenyra’s son, Viserys II, becomes King of the Seven Kingdoms. It’s through him that we get the rest of the Targaryen line. He fathers Aegon IV, who fathers Daeron II.

Daeron then fathers Maekar I, and then we get to Aegon V, who is nicknamed “The Unlikely” and “Egg.”

That makes Aegon V the great-great-great-grandson of Rhaenyra Targaryen.

Yes, Egg is one of the main characters on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

This could now be a spoiler for how the series will go. After all, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is also known as the story of Dunk and Egg. Egg is a low-born Targaryen prince who ends up meeting Dunk.

Dunk is a squire to Ser Arlan of Pennytree, but he ends up becoming a wandering hedge knight, in the hope of following his master’s footsteps. It’s when Dunk gets into a fight with Prince Aerion that Egg steps in, revealing himself to be Aegon, Aerion’s younger brother.

The stories are still being written in the A Knight of a Seven Kingdom universe, so it’s not clear just how Aegon V becomes king. We’re sure to find out, but we know it has to happen based on the timeline from Game of Thrones.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms premieres on Sunday, Jan. 18 on HBO and HBO Max.
