The Outlander: Blood of My Blood season 1 finale delivered a wedding, but it wasn’t the one that Colum MacKenzie was expecting. In the end, he needed to pivot on the spot, and it could work out in his favor.
Ellen MacKenzie ran away with Brian. Well, for the wedding itself, she was hiding out in a cubby with her love, and nobody searched all that hard for her. It meant that Colum had to figure out a new plan, as it was either a wedding or a funeral, and of course, he was choosing wedding.

Dougal and Maura ended up getting married in Outlander: Blood of My Blood
In a twist of events, Dougal and Maura married. It’s clear from the two of them that they didn’t really want it, but also, that they were going to do their duty for their clans. It’s a shame we didn’t see the conversation between Colum and Dougal, but it looks like Dougal didn’t put up too much of a fight, knowing that the future of the clan relied on him.
This could be a great marriage, as we’ve looked into at claireandjamie.com before. At least, at first. We know from Outlander season 1 that there were some feelings between them, even if they didn’t have the best of marriages thanks to Dougal’s cheating. Yet, we get the hope of something good to come for the two of them in Outlander: Blood of My Blood season 2.
As for Colum, this marriage could end up being beneficial for him.

Dougal MacKenzie will stay at Castle Leoch
Ellen pointed out that when she married Malcolm Grant, she would end up being absorbed into the Grant clan. In terms of loyalty, she would no longer be loyal to her brothers. Instead, she would have to stand by her husband, which meant no spying for Colum.
That can change now, as Maura Grant will be absorbed into the MacKenzie clan. It’s possible that whoever becomes laird of Clan Grant won’t think about how that will affect them.
Of course, it’s not young Malcolm who will become laird. In a shocking turn of events, Brian killed Malcolm as he and Ellen escaped. It’s presumably going to be his uncle, another Malcolm, who takes over the lairdship, and this is a man with his head screwed on when it comes to legalities. However, has he been away from Scotland long enough to overlook the fact that the women become loyal to their husband’s clan?
With the Grants siding with the Jacboties and Colum finding himself without much of a choice, having Dougal and Maura together could be advantageous for him. That is if Dougal will actually follow what Colum asks of him as easily as he did with the wedding.
