We always knew that we would meet younger versions of characters in Outlander: Blood of My Blood. The prequel series also gave us a chance to meet people just mentioned in the flagship series. Well, one of those is Maura Grant.

The Outlander: Blood of My Blood season 1 finale quickly introduced us to Maura Grant, and it made a lot of sense. She was at Castle Leoch for her brother’s wedding, but we had to get to see her interact with Dougal considering the storyline to come. Malcolm wasn’t the Grant to get married in the episode, with Ellen running away. Dougal and Maura had to get married.
This episode marks the first time we’ve actually met Maura Grant MacKenzie in the Outlander universe. Now it’s time to dive into what we already know about her to see what’s to come in Outlander: Blood of My Blood season 2.
Maura MacKenzie has four daughters with Dougal in Outlander
From the books and the show, we know that Maura and Dougal have four daughters together. Those daughters aren’t seen or really mentioned that much, and we don’t get to know what happened to them after Culloden. We also don’t know how old those daughters are, but we do know that by Outlander season 1, Dougal and Maura have been married for around 24 years.

The canon has slightly changed in the TV show. While the books state 24 years, I don’t remember the TV show stating that. It does allow for Outlander: Blood of My Blood to change the years slightly, as 24 years would have put the wedding in 1719. Well, it’s still 1715 in the prequel series.
In fact, I do think it makes more sense for the wedding to play out as it did, but then we have to remember that the book storyline is that Ellen and Brian ran away at The Gathering at Castle Leoch and not at Ellen and Malcolm’s wedding, so I guess it all negates the book storyline.
Maura Grant dies off-screen in Outlander season 1
There is some heartbreak for Dougal MacKenzie in Outlander season 1, as he learns that his wife has died of a sudden fever. Considering Dougal and Geillis are having an affair, there is the suspicion by many that Geillis killed Maura, but it’s never really discussed in the show.
What we do get to see is Dougal’s grief. While he is a man of many affairs, he still clearly cares deeply for his wife. He struggles with her sudden passing at first, and I hope that Outlander: Blood of My Blood shows the respect that he likely has for her, and maybe even love in his own way.
