The time is almost here for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and that means you’ll be getting ready. As it arrives at the start of the New Year, you’ll definitely want to make sure you have time to watch the episodes. After all, that’s when broadcast returns and when some great PBS shows are back.
So, how many weeks do we need to fit into our schedule? That depends on the episode count, and we have an idea of that. It’s somewhat disappointing for Game of Thrones fans, but then, that’s all going to depend on how well the novellas have been adapted.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 1 episode count
According to Deadline, George R.R. Martin previously said that there would be only six episodes in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 1. This is much shorter than House of the Dragon and the first set of seasons of Game of Thrones.
In fact, it matches Game of Thrones season 8, which has gone down as the worst of the seasons, partly because it was so rushed. However, in some good news, Martin is part of the production, so that offers hope that the actual story will be followed!
Also in some good news, the Dunk & Egg stories are in the form of novellas rather than the huge tomes that the Game of Thrones books are. This means that there’s less to adapt, so fewer episodes are needed.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will stay true to the Dunk & Egg novels
The series is based on the novellas that follow Ser Duncan the Tall and a young Prince Aegon Targaryen. They are fully fleshed out novellas, unlike Fire & Blood, which is written more as a history textbook. That means that all the stories are there on the page, and in some great news, there was a promise to follow the story as close to the book tale as possible.
The first season will be based on The Hedge Knight, which starts off Duncan’s journey. We get to see how he ends up running into the Targaryen family, and how he ends up on a bigger adventure with Aegon Targaryen, a boy who will one day be King of the Seven Kingdoms.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 has been confirmed, and that is likely to follow The Sworn Sword, which is the second novella in the story. Then there is a third one, titled The Mystery Knight. Martin stopped writing after that point, as he put his focus on The Winds of Winter, although we’re still waiting on the next Game of Thrones novel.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms premieres on Sunday, Jan. 18 on HBO and HBO Max.
