Outlander Season 3 covers the 20-year separation for Claire and Jamie. It takes place across multiple years, and here’s everything you need to know.

We knew Claire and Jamie would be separated for 20 years based on the book. That didn’t mean we’d like to see the two separated on the TV series. For the first five episodes, we see Claire living in the 20th century. Well, more like surviving. Back in the 18th century, we see Jamie just getting on with his life hopeful that Claire made it back to her own time.

It did lead to one of the best moments on TV: Claire and Jamie’s reunion at the print shop. So, which years does this season take place in?

Claire in the 20th century in Outlander Season 3

We pick up off the back of the Outlander Season 2 premiere. Claire and Frank are now in Boston in 1948. We follow their time together as Claire struggles with the loss of Jamie while carrying Brianna.

Over the course of the first five episodes, we see Claire and Frank at different points in their lives together. There is a point in 1956 when she decides that it’s time to become a doctor, which is where she meets Joe Abernathy. We get to see her and Joe (among others) graduate, and we see Claire working as a surgeon.

Eventually, we pick up in 1968. Frank dies in a car accident, and that’s when Claire and Bree leave Boston for a trip to Scotland. They meet Roger, only to find out that Jamie is still alive somewhere in the past. It’s at Christmas 1968 that Claire is able to go back through the stones.

Jamiein the 18th century in Outlander Season 3

During the Season 3 premiere, we pick up in 1746 at the Battle of Culloden. We get to see how Jamie survives, and then we see the seven years of him in hiding and the trouble his family faces to keep him hidden. Eventually, we pick up with him at Ardsmuir Prison until the prison closes down.

There are various points in the 1750s that we see Jamie surviving and trying to make the most of his life. Eventually, we get to 1766, when Jamie is running a print shop in Edinburgh. Of course, he has a few illegal activities going on, too.

It’s in 1766 that Claire comes back and reunites with Jamie. Their reunion is perfect, but there is trouble for them moving forward. Jamie has married Laoghaire, Young Ian is kidnapped, and there is a certain “witch” back from the dead who wants to get to Brianna.

The season ends in 1766 with Claire and Jamie shipwrecked in the Colonies.
