Outlander Book Club: An Echo in the Bone Chapter 93 breakdown
Just the Outlander chapter
We start with Claire at the print shop with Marsali and the children. It looks like a standard day, but Lord John Grey comes in with bad news. The ship Jamie was on has gone down. Everyone has been lost.
We see things from John’s point of view. He shares what he saw at the dock. Since he wasn’t in uniform, people wouldn’t listen to him so he can’t break up the crowds. However, he does run into Captain Richardson, who wants to know about his relationship with Claire.
Richardson is going to arrest Claire as a spy. Claire has been handing out seditious papers. We knew this from the previous chapter we saw Claire. She decided that as an older woman, she wouldn’t be spotted. Well, she has been.
John has to figure out a way to save Claire. He needs to do this for Jamie, and he is in mourning at this point. So, he tells Claire that they must marry. This is the only way he can protect her—and he can protect Marsali, Fergus, and the children.
There is so much of an echo to when Claire married Jamie in this. Claire married Jamie to protect her life after being accused of being a spy. Now she has to marry John, and she doesn’t remember much of the wedding at all, just like her wedding with Jamie.
After the ceremony, everyone is worried about Claire. She doesn’t feel like any of this is real or that Jamie is really dead. I can’t tell if it’s disbelief or the fact that she would feel it if something happened to Jamie. Whatever it is, Dottie and William are both worried about her and take her to John, who has a surprise for his new wife. He wants to make sure Claire continues her work as a surgeon and offers her a gift to do that. It’s a full medical chest, connecting us to a gift Jamie once got Claire.
John has no idea how much is reminiscent of Jamie in this moment.
