Just the Outlander chapter

The chapter starts with Claire and Jamie heading to a house where Simon Fraser is being treated. He knew Jamie was fighting for the rebels and wanted to say his last goodbyes. Claire goes to help, but there are two doctors there already. One surgeon—and Claire—knows that Simon can’t be saved, but the other surgeon is trying his hardest to save the man.

William is there, and Claire is worried that he’ll see Jamie and put all the connections together. She’s also worried that others will put it all together. However, William is called away. We know that Jamie has realized William is there but hasn’t looked up, knowing that he can’t give anything away.

After Simon’s death, Claire talks to Dr. Rawlings, Daniel Rawlings’s brother. This Dr. Rawlings finds out what happened to his brother, and the two connect over what they knew of the man. This Dr. Rawlings has also worked out that William is Jamie’s son, but it doesn’t look like he’s going to say anything. If Rawlings wants to see Claire again, she tells him that people know of her as the White Witch.

On the way back to the rebels’ camp, Jamie notes that this is the second time he’s been close to William. This time, he even gave William his hat. This connects back to the previous chapter as Jamie had refused to shoot Simon and allowed the bullet to go astray, but it hit William’s hat. William still has no idea that Jamie is his father, or what giving the hat means to both of them.

Back with William, Grant explains that Simon wanted to make William a captain. Grant also says that he didn’t see a spot of kinsmanship between Jamie and Simon in terms of looks. He did see it between Jamie and William. Grants jokingly asks if William has some Scottish in him. By the very end, William takes it upon himself to greet the mourners to Simon’s body.
