Claire and Jamie got a surprise supporter in the Outlander Season 6 finale. Tom Christie wants to see justice, but why is he helping Claire?

The last person we thought of to help Claire and Jamie was Tom Christie. This is a grieving father, even if he did want her buried in an unmarked grave. There is still a loss there, and we know Tom is a man who struggles with his pride while following what he believes to be righteous based on the Bible.

He’s a complicated man, and that was made extremely clear in the Outlander Season 6 finale. Tom looked less put together than ever before when seeing Claire. It’s clear that something is playing on him, so why would he support Claire in this time? Why would he give Claire and Jamie one night in their bed together, and then make it clear that he would ride with them to ensure Claire’s safety and justice?

Does Tom think Claire is innocent in the Outlander Season 6 finale?

This could be grief, but there’s also something much bigger to this. Tom genuinely wants justice. He wants to make sure that Claire receives a fair trial, and he knows that Richard Brown is not going to offer that. In fact, he sees what Richard is doing with his own eyes during the journey to Wilmington.

There is a chance that Tom doesn’t think that Claire is guilty. If he really did, I’m sure he would have been the one leading the charge with the fisherfolk. He would have wanted a witch strung up, but he doesn’t believe that Claire is a witch. He’s said that to her before, and he genuinely meant it.

There could also be some feelings there. We know what they are based on the books, but let’s keep this to just the series. We’ve seen some great bonding moments between Claire and Tom. It’s clear that he appreciates her at times. He does respect her abilities as a healer, even if he’s not too happy about a woman doing the job. He has seen Claire do good things with her skills, and there is an element of admiration in that.

Do those feelings go deeper? The fact that he gave Claire money in the jail certainly suggests that. Why else would he make sure she was protected? This is more than just wanting a fair trial because he knows that isn’t a possibility. She’s facing the court of public opinion.
