Outlander Season 6 premiere confirmed for March 2022
It’s official, Sassenachs! We finally have a premiere date for Outlander Season 6. After months of being teased it would be coming in early 2022, we now have the answer.
Get ready for the premiere episode! It’s going to be 90 minutes. This season will have a total of eight episodes instead of the original plan of 12. I think the combination of delayed production on Season 6 due to the pandemic, filming in Scotland’s winter, the length of time it takes to film and finish post-production, and Caitriona Balfe’s pregnancy all played a role in this decision.
But dinna fash! According to Sam Heughan, the episode count may be shorter but the run time of those episodes will be longer than previous seasons. The remaining four episodes are going to be tacked onto Outlander Season 7 for a total of 16 episodes that season.
But now back to Season 6. We did think it was going to come out in February 2022 based on a tweet from Sam. But apparently, he was wrong! Or maybe due to post-production they had to push the premiere date a bit. I did have my heart set on a Valentine’s Day premiere, but that’s ok!

The date is an interesting choice. What’s tough about Outlander is that it doesn’t seem like there’s a certain pattern when they choose release dates. Season 1 premiered in August 2014, Season 3 in September 2017, and Season 5 in February 2020.
It does make sense though. Each season is so unique and the story is constantly changing. The show has to look at the storyline, filming, and post-production. I will say, it has been a verra long wait between the fifth and sixth season.
The last episode of Outlander Season 5 aired in May 2020. It’ll be almost two years since our beloved Jamie and Claire have been on our screens! But the extended wait was out of everyone’s control and I’m sure the whole team was working as quickly as possible to get the new season out for fans.
March 6 isn’t too bad of a wait. When early 2022 was first announced, I was hoping we would have our favorite show back a little earlier. But now as long as I know when Droughtlander is going to be over, I’m a happy gal!
What is Outlander Season 6 about?
There are not many details on what to expect in the new season yet. But thanks to New York Comic Con and the teaser there are some takeaways.
We know some new characters, the Christies, are coming and they’re going to be trouble on Frasers Ridge. I mean, what’s new? The American Revolutionary War is also a cloud hanging over Jamie and Claire’s heads. The series has been building up to it for the last couple of seasons.
We’re probably going to see Brianna and Roger settle into Frasers Ridge now that they’ve accepted this is their home. I’m a show-first fan so I don’t know what’s coming up, but I’m getting a bit nervous for Marsali and Fergus. Why can’t they just stay happy?
I’m also really looking forward to learning about what happened to Young Ian. He just broke my heart in Season 5. I need to know!
How to watch Outlander Season 6
You can watch the first episode once it drops on the STARZ app the morning of March 6 at midnight ET. It will then air on the channel at 8 p.m. ET/PT Sunday nights. UK fans will be able to watch it on STARZPLAY through Amazon. The new season will air the same day and date as the U.S.
