Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter

There is a little bit of foreshadowing in this chapter. We can see that Roger is trying to find a place. He offers to deliver the surveys because he wants to be useful. Without his voice, he’s lost his sense of purpose on the Ridge.

Roger will find a place on the Ridge eventually. He realizes that he doesn’t need his singing voice to find purpose on the Ridge, but it has to take time. Roger needs to go on his own spiritual journey, which is to come within the next few chapters.

Him offering to deliver the surveys will help him. He goes out on his own and figures out his own head.

Adapting The Fiery Cross chapter

The chapter wasn’t used for Outlander Season 5. We didn’t see Roger head out to deliver the surveys or the tension between Roger and Bree for too long. Everything for Roger was contained in one episode.

Bree certainly worried about her husband. Roger did need to find a new purpose in his life while on the Ridge.

In the end, Roger did head out on a journey. He and Young Ian, who returned earlier in the show than in the books, headed out to survey the land. It was a spiritual and mental journey for both of them. Both were in a state of depression and despair. It was easy to focus on Roger’s depression, but Young Ian was hiding a lot.

I adored the way the series handled it. We get to see this bond form between Young Ian and Roger. The two didn’t share too much, but they both connected over the same depression and despair. They both helped each other, showing us that we don’t always know what’s going on in someone’s life. Sometimes, people just need others to see them and listen to them because they don’t know how to talk or open up.
