Outlander Book Club: The Fiery Cross Chapter 75 breakdown
Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter
As I mentioned in the intro, there isn’t that much in the way of foreshadowing in this chapter. The Fiery Cross Chapter 75 simply moves things along. It’s all about Roger speaking for the first time since Alamance.
Not all chapters have foreshadowing. They don’t all need it. They just need to be meaningful in some sort of way.
Adapting The Fiery Cross chapter
On Outlander Season 5, Episode 8, Roger did scream to protect Jemmy. He was the only one seeing that Jemmy was about to touch something that would injure him severely, and his fatherly instincts kicked in. However, he wouldn’t speak Brianna’s name after that.
The show adapted Roger’s healing journey a little differently. In the book, we got a little of that healing journey, although through the eyes of other characters. I would have loved to have it from Roger’s point of view. In the show, the healing journey was after Roger physically healed.
Claire made a point that Roger should be able to speak. He was simply refusing to speak. Maybe it was out of fear that he never would be able to. However, it seems that he needed to break past the trauma to finally get the courage to speak.
I loved the way the show handled it. I loved the silent movie flashbacks, something that I’ve talked about in the past. The way Roger had to heal mentally as well as physically was important to me, and I’m glad the show offered that.
Brianna is still the first thing Roger says. It’s just after he’s broken through his trauma; when he realizes that it wasn’t about last words but about the last person he saw in his mind. It was all about Brianna.
