Outlander Book Club: The Fiery Cross Chapter 65 breakdown
Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter
We get this sense that not all is well with Roger. We know what happened at the end of the previous chapter, but Jamie doesn’t know yet. However, Jamie is clearly worried that his son-in-law is going to die.
Jamie, Claire and Brianna do eventually find Roger, and things aren’t good. Roger is very close to death.
Adapting The Fiery Cross chapter
The chapter was partly used for the series. Jamie did come across a Regulator during the chapter, but it wasn’t a young man he barely knew. Instead, he came across Murtagh, who saved Jamie’s life in the middle of the fight.
However, one of Jamie’s militiamen killed Murtagh suddenly. This guy thought Murtagh was attacking, which wasn’t that surprising considering the situation. Nobody knew about Murtagh.
In the end, we got a moment from a previous book adapted into Outlander Season 5. Murtagh’s final speech to Jamie was used in Outlander Season 5, Episode 7.
I really enjoyed the development. Murtagh was one of my favorite characters, and I’m glad he got a bigger story for the series. Due to the way Murtagh was developed for the series, this was important. TV characters are developed in a different way and can touch our hearts in ways that book characters don’t because it feels like we get to know them rather than the descriptions from Claire, Roger, and others.
Giving us a heartbreaking goodbye scene in real-time instead of just as a memory was the perfect way to end things for the character.
