Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter

There’s a sense of dread in this chapter. If Roger is caught, everything could end up badly for him. By the end of this chapter, he’s able to leave without a threat to his life, but there is still that threat overhead.

The mentions of the badge to note that he’s a member of the militia are important. They’re going to come up again. Roger’s specific badge is going to come up, and it is definitely not going to be good for him. We get the foreshadowing of the threat to Roger to come.

Adapting The Fiery Cross chapter

The chapter was partly used in Outlander Season 5, Episode 7. Roger did head to the Regulators’ camp, but it wasn’t to speak to Herman Husband. Murtagh was the leader of the Regulators on the show, and Roger went out to speak to him.

While I know there were a lot of complaints about the change to Murtagh’s character, I thought it believable and realistic. We have to remember that we didn’t see Murtagh’s life in the Colonies. We just know what he’s told us, and it involved time as an indentured servant. He became disenfranchised, and I wasn’t surprised to see him want to fight for his people.

However, that didn’t mean he wanted to be on the opposite side of battle to Jamie. He’d have wanted the two to fight side by side. And Murtagh wasn’t going to lead people into a losing battle. The difference with the show is that Brianna managed to get to Alamance to share what she knew, and Roger went out to tell Murtagh everything.

It all worked for the show. Having Murtagh as the leader of the Regulators made me feel more for this side of the battle. I didn’t really feel all that connected to the cause in the book, but it held more weight with Murtagh there. I appreciate the show’s change.
