Just the Outlander chapter

Roger heads through the Regulators’ camps. He’s looking for Herman Husband, and Roger realizes that not everyone even knows Husband by name. He’s known as the Quaker to some. It’s as Roger gets closer to Husband that people start to know the man by name.

This says a lot about the Regulators. Those on the inside know a lot of the details, but there are a lot of people following due to faith and their political allegiances. There are people who follow due to ideologies but don’t necessarily know the people in charge.

During the walk through the camp, Roger thinks about a metal badge in his pocket. It has “FC” branded into it to note that he’s part of Fraser Company in the militia. However, it can’t be on show in the Regulator camp because then they’ll know he’s the enemy. Roger did question Jamie about how they would tell people apart on the battlefield.

When Roger gets to Husband, they talk. Husband doesn’t think it’s possible to stop the bloodshed at first, but he asks Roger to pray with him. Husband wants guidance from God, and that’s what he feels like he gets. Husband doesn’t need to see the militia and the threat across the water. He trusts Roger’s word and agrees to talk to the Regulators to get them to go home.

However, not everyone is willing to listen. Not everyone believes that it will all lead to bloodshed. Some of the Regulators believe that they have the numbers so they will win. However, Roger is sure the artillery the militia has will be enough to win.

In the end, Roger doesn’t get the outcome he wants. Husband doesn’t have the sway everyone hoped for.
