Outlander Book Club: The Fiery Cross Chapter 61 breakdown
Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter
There’s a little foreshadowing for Roger’s story in this chapter. It’s not exactly clear at first, but Claire is worried. Roger has been gone for two hours now. He was supposed to get Husband, but we get this sense that something has happened to him. Of course, we find out that something did happen to him when he was at the Regulator camp.
We also get the foreshadowing that the talks are going to fail. The Regulators are going to stand for what they believe in, and it’s not going to end pretty.
Adapting The Fiery Cross chapter
The chapter wasn’t used for the series. In Outlander Season 5, Jamie and Claire had to hide their connection to the Regulators. We didn’t get to know Herman Husband, and neither did the Frasers really. Instead, Jamie spent time hiding the fact that Murtagh was his godfather, and that meant he couldn’t tell Tryon that he’d sent Roger out to try to get the men to stand down.
Tryon and Jamie did talk before the battle, though. It was that moment Tryon gave Jamie the red coat to wear. I know there are some people who hated this, but I loved the meaning behind this. I loved the way Jamie tried to fight against wearing it, and the way he just didn’t look comfortable. There are a lot of reasons for Jamie to hate the look of this coat, let alone actually wear it!
It wasn’t just Jamie’s face, though. Claire had a look of horror and sorrow when she saw Jamie wearing the coat. She knew what it meant to him, but she also knew there was no way Jamie could have said no to Tryon.
For me, the moment added this extra element of dread and darkness to the battle. It was clear how it was all going to end.
