Brianna showed her ability to think on the spot on Outlander Season 5, Episode 10
Stephen Bonnet kidnapped Brianna on Outlander Season 5, Episode 10. While she could have given into fear, she showed her ability to think on the spot.
Bree certainly went through a range of emotions during the episode. She found herself trapped in a house, with her own life and the life of Jemmy in jeopardy. There was no telling what Bonnet would do, although we knew he was in the business of trafficking women.
The only thing Brianna could do was survive and hope her parents would find her. However, she didn’t just sit by and wait, finding various ways to protect herself. That was until she couldn’t fake a kiss with Bonnet.
We got a chance to see Brianna in a different light during Outlander Season 5, Episode 10. The one moment that stands out the most for me is her reading a story to Bonnet, a story that hadn’t even been published yet.
Brianna ‘reads’ Moby Dick to Bonnet on Outlander Season 5, Episode 10
Bonnet wants Brianna to teach him how to love. She can’t bear to be near him at this point, so instead, she offers to read to him. He has already made it clear that he can’t read, which means she has the perfect opportunity.
Bree picks up The Art of Husbandry but doesn’t actually read the book to him. Instead, she recites Moby Dick from memory. I’m certainly impressed with her memory, but she had already pointed out to Claire that it was her favorite book.
The best thing is he’d never know that the book hadn’t even been published yet. By not being able to read, he wouldn’t have paid attention to any of the book titles anywhere in the world, and Brianna knew that.
She has this ability to think on the spot to preserve her life and prevent her rapist getting close to her again. We already know she’s smart, but this is a moment that shows her ability to plan ahead. She can push away all other thoughts of fear and remain calm in the moment.
It’s not easy doing that. I can say that from experience. This moment made me love Brianna all the more.
This moment does lead to Bonnet opening up about his fears. That leads to Brianna shooting Bonnet when he’s sentenced to death by drowning. Whether it was mercy or vengeance, we’ll never really know (and we don’t get to or need to know that), but it was this one moment in Outlander Season 5, Episode 10 that led to it all.
I hope to see more of this side of Brianna on Outlander Season 6. She’s a strong-willed and smart woman, and it’s time to give us more of that.
