Dark Tides by Philippa Gregory is now available to purchase

When it comes to authors with plenty of books, Philippa Gregory is a name that will stand out. You’ve likely heard of her as an Outlander fan, as the mind behind The White Princess and other books set during the Plantagenet and Tudor periods. Now it’s time for Dark Tides to help you get through Droughtlander.

Dark Tides is the sequel to Tidelands. If you haven’t read the first book, don’t worry about catching up. You don’t need to know the events from the first book to be able to read the second. However, reading them in order does make a lot more sense to get to know some of the characters in the story.

More from Outlander Books

Dark Tides by Philippa Gregory picks up 21 years after the first novel. There are new characters to get to know, and a new mystery to unfold.

What is Dark Tides about?

The novel takes place in three countries. The main storyline is in London, England. However, part of this story eventually travels to Venice, Italy.

The third part of the story takes place in the New World, in New England in 1670. We follow Ned as he gets to know the Natives around the area, finding himself trapped between his people and the people of the land.

However, the main part of the story is everything going on in London when Livia arrives. She is the widow of Robert, Alinor’s son. Robert has died and Livia brings their baby to England in the hope of finding a home. Can Alinor and her daughter Alys trust Livia? There’s something that doesn’t quite add up.

Things get even more suspicious when she starts to bring her furniture over from Italy and forces her way into the heart of a wealthy man. It’s time to unravel the truth throughout the novel.

Why it’s perfect for Outlander fans

Dark Tides isn’t set in Scotland or even in the same time period as Outlander. What makes it a great Droughtlander option?

The biggest part is the storyline with Ned in New England. He gets to know the people of the local Native tribe, learning more about life in the New World. At the same time, we see the start of the downfall of relations between the English and the Natives. With Outlander now in the Colonies, even in the 18th century inside of the 17th century, it’s a great chance to learn a little more about this time period.

Then there’s the focus on strong women. The book’s lead characters are all females. They’re the ones that uncover the truth and figure out what’s really going on. And a lot of the book is focused on Livia, as we get to know her and figure out what she’s up to. These women have their flaws, but at the same time, they’re intriguing characters.
