Claire’s Top 5 moments from Outlander Season 1, Episode 4
At the end of Outlander Season 1, Episode 3, Claire got a renewed sense of hope of getting back to Frank. She put together a plan to escape in Episode 4.
Titled “The Gathering,” the episode aired on this day six years ago for the very first time. It was a chance to see the Highland culture, especially the loyalty to the laird of a clan. There was also a chance to see the way things worked in the Highlands, which wasn’t necessarily a good thing for Jamie.
It’s time to look at Claire’s best moments from Outlander Season 1, Episode 4.
Scouting for her escape
The episode opens with Claire running through the forest and the centuries ready to shoot her. She’s playing a game with the local children, but this is a woman with another plan. She’s scouting to get ready for her escape.
While some would just try to escape in the dead of night, Claire is taking her time to prepare. She has a good head on her shoulders, although it’s not clear if she would be able to survive in the Highlands long enough to get to the stones.

Claire knows that she needs to keep her guards away from her. How can she manage that? We get a moment where she helps Rupert and Angus choose who will try their hand at a woman giving one of them eyes. It turns out the woman was interested in Rupert, even though Angus “won.”
Of course, Claire still has a plan for him. She has port with a sedative mixed in. There’s no way he’d give up good alcohol.
Handling Dougal in the hallway
As Claire tries to escape, she is acosted in the hallway by some men. Dougal gets rid of them, but he then decides to attempt rape. Claire fights him off, but she can’t leave without the provisions she’s collected.
When Dougal sees the bag, he’s reaching down for it as Claire hits him over the head. We see a woman who is certainly able to think on her feet; something we see more of in later episodes and seasons.
Her concern for Jamie
Outlander Season 1, Episode 4 doesn’t give us that much Jamie, but what we get is good. We learn about why it’s so dangerous for him to take the MacKenzie oath.
Claire watches in horror as she’s sure Jamie will be killed. Fortunately, he thinks on his feet too. However, this is an excellent Claire moment to show her concern for Jamie. It’s a concern she’s shown nobody else.
Helping Geordie die peacefully
At the end of the episode, there’s the boar hunt. One of the men is gravely injured, and all Claire can do is help him die peacefully.
That’s something she knows how to do. Claire has seen men die from violent means; too many of them. As stupid as the men were hunting the boar, she doesn’t accost him in his dying minutes. She helps him go to a peaceful place. As Dougal says, it’s all we can all ask for when we die.
