Diana Gabaldon had to be teasing us about Claire in Outlander Book 9
During the Outlander End of Summer Series event with Diana Gabaldon and Maril Davis, there was a tease of Claire’s death in Outlander Book 9. It has to be a tease on Diana’s part, though.
Diana shared that Jamie wouldn’t die. For some reason, fans have asked her if Jamie would die in the ninth book. We’re not sure where that fear came from, but Diana settled us all with the confirmation that he wouldn’t die in the ninth book.
Maril Davis quickly pointed out that nothing was said about Claire specifically. Would she die in Outlander Book 9? Diana refused to say with a coy remark.
However, we’re pretty certain that Claire can’t die in the ninth book. Maybe at the very end of the 10th book (Claire and Jamie of old age is the only way we can see the story ending because nobody can live forever) but not during the ninth book. Here’s why it’s just not possible.
This is Claire’s story about Jamie
Something that has been mentioned from the beginning is that the book series is Claire’s story about Jamie. She’s the one that started it all and I’m sure she’ll be the one that will end it all.
Sure, there have been other characters who have been introduced since. We get chapters from Roger, Brianna, Young Ian, Lord John Grey, and even William, but Claire’s chapters remain the only ones that are told in first person.
Without Claire, Jamie’s story can’t continue.
There’s no Jamie without Claire
Speaking of Jamie’s story, there is no Jamie without Claire. In the same sense, there is no Claire without Jamie. The two are so great together. They balance each other out, support each other, and comfort one another. They are stronger together than they are apart.
There wouldn’t really be a story if one of them died. That would be the end of it, except maybe if one died a few years before the other when they are in the 80s or 90s. That would be realistic for life. But it would be the very end of the story, and we know there’s a 10th book coming.
In fact, we also know that the story will end sometime in the 1800s. Unless there’s a huge time jump in the ninth book, death isn’t happening in “Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone.”
Diana Gabaldon said our favorite characters wouldn’t die
During the conversation about Jamie not dying, Diana Gabaldon had previously said that none of our favorite characters would die. Well, that should instantly rule Claire out. She is a fan-favorite (and a necessary) character in the book series.
I do think just with that statement it’s clear that Diana was just teasing us about Claire’s death. There’s absolutely no way that it can happen.
