Outlander Season 1, Episode 14 ratings throwback: Claire and Murtagh episode ticked up
Outlander Season 1, Episode 14 is an episode with mixed opinions. However, the Claire and Murtagh-focused episode saw a good tick up in the ratings.
On this day in history, Outlander Season 1, Episode 14 aired for the first time. While it does have mixed reviews from fans, it’s a very important episode overall when it comes to the bond Claire and Murtagh form. Here’s a chance to see what the ratings were like for the episode.
According to TV Series Finale, the live ratings were strong. The audience ticked up by 3% from the previous episode, while the demo ticked up by 20%. Clearly, fans were ready for an episode that focused on Claire’s search for Jamie.
Maybe it was the cliffhanger at the end of the previous episode that drew fans in. We knew Jamie had been taken by someone in an ambush. While the episode with The Watch wasn’t all that entertaining for some, books fans knew what was coming.
“The Search” actually has some of my favorite moments from the first season. We get to see Jenny and Claire bond more, learning a little more about each other—and more importantly, Claire learning a lot more about Jenny and her relationship with her brother.
But my favorite part was getting more Murtagh. In the books, he never really bonded with Claire. We saw hints of a friendship forming throughout the first few episodes, but it was this one where Claire and Murtagh really found a new respect for each other.
This episode would have a knock-on effect later in the series. It would make Murtagh more important in Season 2, would help the showrunners make the decision to keep him alive after Culloden, and would lead to that awesome reunion between Claire and Murtagh during Season 4. So, while it may be an episode some fans don’t like, with each rewatch, it becomes one of my all-time favorites.
