There weren’t many Roger moments, but some stood out the most on Outlander Season 5, Episode 3. Here are my three favorite moments from Free Will.

Roger didn’t have too many moments on screen in Outlander Season 5, Episode 3. That doesn’t mean his moments weren’t important. In fact, he was the one that pointed out there wasn’t a scar on Kezzie’s hand.

Looking back at the episode, it’s time to assess Roger’s best moments. Here are my three favorite moments from “Free Will.”

3. Noticing the lack of scar

His observation of a lack of scar certainly stood out. This suggests that Claire or Jamie told him about Josiah Beardsley at some point. My guess would be Claire considering the relationship she has with her son-in-law.

When the militia men caught Kezizah, Roger immediately noticed that this wasn’t Josiah they were dealing with. It didn’t take long for Jamie to produce Josiah and the story to be told, but it certainly helped to quell a potentially dangerous situation.

2. His goodbye with Brianna

Leaving for war isn’t easy. Bree says that it isn’t going to be a war, but that doesn’t keep the feeling from the pit of everyone’s stomachs at bay. Roger and Brianna have a goodbye that they’ve never experienced before.

Roger tries to keep it light. He doesn’t want to think about what could happen to him or to Bree. He just keeps things focused on as many positives as possible.

1. Making a promise he can’t keep

Ah, Roger is showing signs that he’s not a captain. Well, of course he isn’t. We know he’s a scholar, but he needs to make decisions as a captain. In Outlander Season 5, Episode 3, he shows just how much of a captain he isn’t.

While trying to convince Mrs. Findlay to allow her sons to join the militia, Roger makes a promise that he can’t possibly keep. He tells her that he won’t let any harm come to her sons. When she makes him follow that promise, he back tracks and says he’ll do what’s in his power, but that promise is still out there—and everyone knows Roger shouldn’t have made it.

This just continues to show that Roger isn’t quite suited for the past just yet. It’s no wonder he wants to go back to his own time.
